Expecting to Fly
In these pieces, I enter into the environment of anxiety, confusion, and shame in which I found myself as a young girl and adolescent, trying to move into an adulthood that made some kind of sense for me. Using techniques often associated with girlhood such as paper dolls, miniature stage sets, and doll houses, as well as storybook and dreamscape imagery, I tell the stories from a girl’s perspective, dispensing my grown up’s incessant need to explain. I hope that the viewer is inspired to reflect on the influences and ideas that have shaped their worldview and consider whether they help of hinder in the journey through life.
